To go along with its strong overall score, we awarded this nursing home an A+ for its short-term care rating. In the category of short-term care, we seek to assess indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Connecticut in this area with 73.8 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

In addition, this facility received high marks in the area of nursing. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. Our nursing score assesses the facility's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This place provided 4.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which is among the better totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We are very impressed by these figures. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this facility also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. With below 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the state in this category. This is typically an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers can be prevented by offering better nursing care and having a policy of turning residents more frequently.

This facility also had a nearly flawless government inspection report. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that area with an A+. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this place had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

The final area we graded is long-term care, where this facility was awarded a B. This actually turned out to be this nursing home's weakest category. A nursing home is doing something right when it's lowest grade still is better than most nursing homes. If you are looking for anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care ratings. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 91.32653 percent of its patients, which is a few points below what we were hoping for. Fortunately, this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.3 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
