Facility Inspections
On top of performing well overall, this facility also received nearly flawless government inspections. Consequently, it earned one of our best scores in that area with an A+. Inspection scores weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another reason we rated this facility so highly is that it received an A+ long-term care grade. This is just about as dominant as it gets in this area. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. On top of providing very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This figure is also significantly better than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.28 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a substantially better hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
In addition, this facility also received favorable nursing grades this year. In fact, we awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. Nursing grades are tied to quantity of nursing care available. This place offers extremely high levels of nursing care, averaging 4.7 hours per resident daily. This is more nursing care than nearly any other facility provides. Finally, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With fewer than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at was this nursing home's weakest category. However, even its weakest link would likely be a highlight for most nursing homes. We awarded it a favorable grade of B for short-term care. In our short-term care assessment, we try to create a sound measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we look at the nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final item we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It was respectable in this area with 47 percent of its residents returning home.
