Although this facility's overall grade was terrible, it performed well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

This nursing home really excelled in the category of nursing, where it received an C. Few places performed better in this area. Our nursing rating is largely based on a nursing home's nurse staffing. Based on the data, it looks like this place provides an impressive 4.1 hours per patient each day. This is more nursing care than most places provide. In computing our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grade also includes some applicable quality-based metrics. While this facility excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it fell short in certain datapoints that related to quality. This place's nursing score was hurt by its subpar performance in the area of minimizing pressure ulcers. In fact, we found that 17.9 percent of this nursing home's residents sustained pressure ulcers. Since many pressure ulcers could be avoided with good nursing protocols, we reduce a nursing home's nursing rating when we see this kind of prevalence of pressure ulcers.

Short-term Care Quality

Our third area we looked at is short-term care, in which this facility received an F. In forming our short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Given its abysmal grade in this category, we weren't shocked to find that this facility provided substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 38.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.

Long-term Care Quality

The next area we graded was long-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. For prospective patients looking for a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. On top of considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 98.82353 percent of its residents. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.65 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
