Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

In addition to performing well overall, this nursing home earned nearly flawless government inspections. Therefore, it received one of our highest grades in that category with an A+. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies an imminent risk to resident safety or health. A couple minor dings are not necessarily the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- in that category. Our nursing rating is primarily associated with the facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of moving a patient at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility also was given a favorable long-term care grade. Indeed, we gave it an above average score of B+ in this category. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a life or death ailment for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility does not leave its residents vulnerable. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The next area we graded was short-term care, in which this facility was awarded a grade of B. While this ended up being its lowest category rating, this is nevertheless an impressive rating. In determining our short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to create a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
