While we were not very complementary of this nursing home's overall grade, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with an A-. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection ratings. One key factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite insignificant. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

We gave this facility a grade of just D for our nursing rating and that actually turned out to be its second highest score. Nursing scores are mostly associated with the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. On top of receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this statistic.

This facility's second worse category was short-term care, where it earned just a D in that category. This is a well below average grade. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Based on its poor score in this area, we were not surprised to find that this nursing home offered far fewer registered nurse hours per patient than most other facilities. The final metric we assessed in this category is the number of patients who ultimately returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area, with just 37.1 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.

Long-term Care Quality

The final area we scored is long-term care, proved to be this facility's least impressive category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that category. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the vaccine to 94.36275 percent of its residents, which is a very solid percentage. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.23 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is far less impressive than its vaccination record.
