Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of performing well overall, this facility also earned nearly flawless government inspections. Consequently, it received one of our highest grades in that area with an A+. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category usually have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this nursing home also was given favorable long-term care grades this year. In fact, we awarded it one of our better scores in that area, with a score of B+. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 96.36363 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. Nursing grades are based in large part on quantity of nursing care available. This facility provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Alabama in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a protocol of moving patients more frequently.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The last area we scored is short-term care. We gave this nursing home one of our higher scores in this area, with a B. This facility proved to be very solid across the board. Our short-term care scores are likely more important for patients needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually mandates more highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents that were able to return home from this facility. We found that 5.6 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.
