Although we gave this facility a terrible overall grade, we awarded it a grade of A for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Our inspection ratings are based on items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important item to look for on these inspections. Most importantly, you should avoid nursing homes with severe deficiencies linked to risks to resident well being. This facility received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies to create an imminent risk to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

Among this nursing home's several abysmal grades was its F in the area of long-term care. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. One of the statistics we considered after nursing hours is vaccines. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. We were far less impressed with the nursing home's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 3.39 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is nearly twice the national average.

Another unfortunate development was the F this nursing home received in the category of short-term care. In determining our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is typically a solid measure of a facility's rehabilitation. As you might expect, we learned that this facility provides substantially less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the typical facility. The last measure we assessed in this category is the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 24.9 percent of its patients returning home.

Turning to the last area, this facility really didn't perform well in this category either. Due to a very poor grade of F in nursing, this is really as as uninspiring as it gets. The nursing category is based on several factors, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility.
