Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

The primary reason this facility received a decent overall score is its excellent government inspections in recent years. We gave it one of our higher grades in that category, with an A+. This is a much better score than the facility's overall score, which was decent but not in the elite range. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this facility's higher category grades came in the category of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B. It actually outpaced most nursing homes in this category. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 83.97291 percent of its patients. This is a bit less than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, we were pleased to find facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The third area we assessed was short-term care, where this facility received a grade of C in this area. Our short-term care grades are believed to be more critical for folks requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 4.6 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

Switching gears to our fourth area, this facility did not fare well. Due to a very poor grade of F in nursing, this was this facility's weakest grade. Our nursing rating considers many data points. The most heavily weighted variable is the quantity of hours nurses spent with residents. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics hurt this facility's nursing grade significantly.
