Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This place received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This means that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to be an immediate threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded an impressive long-term care grade. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for resident care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. There are a variety of criteria within this area. Most of the factors are tied to the quantity and quality of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Iowa in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of turning residents at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
In our last category, we awarded this facility a A+ for its short-term care rating. This finished off an elite profile. Short-term care grades are commonly used to measure a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer higher levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this nursing home provided information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. Finally, we assessed the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents were able to return home.
