Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

While we gave this facility a weak overall rating, we gave it a fairly respectable grade in the category of inspections, where we gave it a grade of B-. This was quite a bit better than its other categories. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Lastly, this nursing home was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. This is generally a really bad sign. We would never recommend this facility.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

We awarded this facility a respectable grade in the area of nursing as well, with a grade of B-. Our nursing grade is primarily based on the facility's nurse staffing. This place averages just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is well below average. Finally, our nursing grades also consider quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this nursing home performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is generally a good indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's third most favorable area turned out to be its short-term care grade, where it was awarded a B-. Our short-term care ratings are arguably more important for folks in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This includes not only nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. We were surprised to find that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. The facility supplied fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. It is important to determine whether this is adversely impacting the quality of care. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 6.2 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

Our next area is long-term care, where we awarded this nursing home a B- in this area. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Finally, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
