Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections is its best category grade. In this area, we awarded it an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection scores. One key factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Among the reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it was awarded a strong long-term care grade. Indeed, long-term care is its second highest category grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is usually a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. After looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 98.10298 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. This facility didn't perform quite as well in this category as it did in some other categories. Nevertheless, this is still a respectable score. Our nursing grade is based on many factors, many of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is usually an indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Moving on to our next area, this nursing home did not perform well. With a very poor grade of F in this category, this was obviously its weakest category. In calculating our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is frequently a reliable measure of the facility's rehabilitation. It looks like this facility was below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we considered. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 4.1 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
