Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility really outperformed its overall score in the area of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best scores in that area with a grade of A+. Inspection ratings are based on datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this area typically have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The second best area we awarded this facility in any area came in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a B-. Our short-term care grade is often employed to grade a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer better levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Unfortunately, we found that this facility provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that returned home from the facility. We found that just 5.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. This figure was below the national average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's third highest area was its long-term care score, where it was given a grade of B-. For prospective patients looking for a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 99.0566 percent of its patients, which is better than most nursing homes. Finally, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

This facility's weakest area is nursing, which is the final area we looked at. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this area. Despite a few acceptable scores in other areas, this grade is still alarming so we wanted to draw your attention to it. In computing a facility's nursing score, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses commit to residents and the level of skill of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. In addition to being below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor marks in the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these data points. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics helped pull down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
