Facility Inspections

Grade: A

While this facility's overall grade was decent, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Arguably the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

One of this nursing home's more favorable category scores came in the category of short-term care. This turned out to be its second most respectable category. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B-. In determining our short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is more often than not a fair measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, it does not appear that this nursing home provided data regarding its registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.2 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The third best category we gave this nursing home in any category came in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a B-. In the category of long-term care, we assess the amount of services offered by a nursing home, as opposed to more healthcare-oriented services. After we finished looking at the quantity of nursing care, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. We were pleased to find that this facility vaccinates 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. This place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Turning to the next area, this nursing home received a grade of C in nursing, which is a respectable grade. In computing a nursing home's nursing score, we consider the amount of time nurses spend with patients and the level of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a relatively low total compared with most facilities. Lastly, while this place did not rank highly in terms of its nursing hours per resident, it performed better in some of the quality measures we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than average.
