Facility Inspections

Grade: A

While we were fairly low on this nursing home overall, we awarded it an A for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the facility's overall grade. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection grades. One critical factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

In addition, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B in our short-term care category. This happens to be one of our more impressive grades. In the area of short-term care, we try to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. We were not able to track down registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this facility. The last item we considered in this category is the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that 5.8 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Sadly, this facility received an F for its long-term care score. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. One of the criteria we considered after nursing hours is vaccines. Frankly, we were a bit bothered by the fact that this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccination to just 78.42779 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this facility actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next category we scored is nursing. It received a lowly F in this area, which is a rock bottom grade. Our nursing grade is based on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This facility averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. In addition to ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this place also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place was at about 1.5 times the national average in both of these metrics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These scores helped pull down this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.
