Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition to being a strong facility overall, this place really excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an A. Few nursing homes performed better in this category. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home also received a favorable long-term care grade. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this category. Facilities that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 99.67427 percent of its patients, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. Our nursing rating looks at the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of training of those nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving a patient even once per day.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final area we graded was short-term care, in which this nursing home received a B-. This actually was this facility's worst area. This is nevertheless a middle of the pack score. Our short-term care grade is generally used to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Unfortunately, it does not look like this facility provided registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
