Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this facility also received an excellent long-term care score, with a grade of A. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is much higher than the average nursing home. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility also fared very well in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A. Not many nursing homes received a better grade in this category. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To have highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that 5.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A- in our nursing category. We weighed the qualifications of nurses employed by the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours the nurses spent with patients, in calculating our score in this area. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving a patient more frequently.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

Lastly, we also wanted to draw your attention to this facility's nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them a B+ in this category. Inspection scores account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.
