Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition to being a respectable nursing home overall, this place really excelled in the category of inspections, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our inspection scores are tied to several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this category typically have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

We also gave this nursing home a solid grade in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of B-. In calculating our long-term care scores, we look at the assistance with daily living offered to a nursing home's patients. After considering the quantity of nursing care, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. We were optimistic to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. This place keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

This facility's second least favorable score was short-term care, where it received a grade of just D in that category. This is a relatively poor score. Short-term care grades are commonly used to assess a nursing home's rehabilitation services In order to offer highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to have higher levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. With a score of this caliber in this area, we weren't surprised to learn this facility was below average in two of the key staffing metrics we assess. The facility offered substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. Finally, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 4.6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next category we analyzed was nursing, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. It received an F for this area, which is clearly a major disappointment. We weighed the licensure of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses were with residents, in determining our grade in this category. This facility averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.
