Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this nursing home earned near flawless health inspections recently. We gave them an A+ in this area. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this area usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

We also wanted to draw your attention to the fact that this facility was given a dominant grade of A- in our long-term care category. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a life or death condition for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Turning to another strength for this nursing home, we awarded them one of our higher grades in our short-term care category as well, with a B+. In calculating our short-term care scores, we assess a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is often a reliable measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that 5.6 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The last category we rated ended up being this nursing home's worst area. Nevertheless, even its weakest link would be a highlight for most nursing homes. We gave it a favorable grade of B in nursing. Our nursing score is primarily associated with a facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This nursing home fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented with better nursing care.
