Facility Inspections

Grade: A+

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this nursing home earned near flawless inspections recently. We gave them an A+ in this area. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

In addition, this facility was given high marks in the area of long-term care. As a result, it received one of our best scores in that area with a score of A+. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is far higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.05 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of B- in this category is by no means a bad score. In calculating a facility's nursing grade, we consider the quantity of hours nurses commit to patients and the level of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides only 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a somewhat concerning figure as it is well below the national average. Finally, despite not having the highest total nursing hours per resident, this facility performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically a good indicator that a facility has quality controls in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Switching gears to our fourth area, we awarded this facility a grade of D in the area of short-term care. This was the facility's weakest category score. However, you shouldn't over-emphasize one weak grade. In forming our short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to formulate a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. We found that this facility was subpar in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the measures we considered. The last item we considered in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics doomed this nursing home's short-term care score.
