Facility Inspections

Grade: A

The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far better than its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it an A. Inspection scores are based on several items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this area typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This nursing home was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies an immediate risk to resident safety or health. A couple relatively minor dings are not necessarily the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's second best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of B-. Nursing scores are mostly associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics. While this place got docked a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in some of these quality measures. With less than five percent of its patients experiencing pressure ulcers, it performed remarkably well in this area. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of moving residents more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next most favorable area is long-term care. We awarded it a B- in this category. This is basically a middle of the pack score in this category. In the area of long-term care, we focus more on the quantity of care provided by a nursing home, as opposed to more sophisticated services. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The next category we looked at was short-term care, is this facility's least impressive area. We gave this nursing home a D in this area. This is one of the couple of dings in a quality report card. In our short-term care grade, we strive to create a fair gauge for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we assess a facility's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most facilities, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
