Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

On top of earning a strong overall grade, this nursing home performed well in short-term care. In fact, we awarded it an impressive grade of A for that category. Short-term care grades are typically employed to gauge a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to offer highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to have higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we considered in this category is the number of patients who returned home from the facility. We found that 5.8 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Turning to another one of this nursing home's strengths, it also earned a very impressive inspection grade. In fact, inspections turned out to be one of its best category grades. We gave this nursing home a grade of A-. Inspection grades account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better grades in this area usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this area. We weighed the qualifications of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the number of hours those nurses were with residents, in calculating our grade in this area. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Indiana in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a resident more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next category we graded was long-term care. This facility received a grade of C in the category. Our long-term care grade is typically used to grade a nursing home's performance as a traditional nursing home, as opposed to focusing on the skilled nursing services offered by a rehabilitation facility. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is better than the vast majority of nursing homes. This place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
