Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong facility is that it received a very impressive long-term care score. This is its best category. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of A. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a reliable method to minimize unnecessary deaths for the aged 65 and up population. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility fared well in the category of short-term care. As a result, we awarded it a score of A for that category, which happens to be one of our most impressive grades. In the area of short-term care, we seek to evaluate indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, it does not appear that this facility submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. The final metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that 6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Our nursing grade looks at the facility's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of skill of those nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Facility Inspections

Grade: C

Moving on to the final category of inspections, this was not one of this facility's better grades. Inspection grades are based on a facility's recent government inspections. We awarded this nursing home a score of C in this category. We believe that one of the most critical factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. In this regard, we especially focus on the severity of the deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report, which is fewer than most facilities. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
