Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

Although we gave this nursing home a terrible overall grade, we gave it a B- for short-term care. Short-term care grades are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a broad scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this facility provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The key is determining what effect this had on quality of care. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who returned home from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was actually quite a bit below the national average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

We were also surprised to find that this facility received a decent nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of B- in that category. Our nursing rating is primarily associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This facility averages 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is well below average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. It scored well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

Facility Inspections

Grade: F

Unfortunately, this place received an F for its inspection score. When a facility has this bad of an inspection score, you should expect some severe deficiencies on its inspection report. Severe deficiencies indicate a risk to the well being of residents. This nursing home had a deficiency by government inspectors. We were relieved to find that it was not in one of the categories that suggest that it caused a risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility also received 42 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The last area we looked at is long-term care. We gave it a lowly F for this area, which is a rock bottom grade. If you are seeking services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each facility's long-term care grades. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this nursing home also keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
