Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far better than its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A-. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this category generally have few severe deficiencies. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find deficiency counts for this nursing home. We wish we had more data for this facility. Without having all of the deficiency related data, it was a challenge to grade this facility in the inspections category.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this facility's more impressive category grades was in the category of long-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of B. It actually outperformed most facilities in this category. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is basically a middle of the road grade in this category. The nursing grade analyzes a handful of datapoints, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home excelled in some of the quality measures we assessed. In fact, it scored well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the number of hours of care offered.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Turning to the last area, this nursing home received a grade of C for short-term care, which is generally a respectable rating. In crafting our short-term care grades, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this facility submitted information about its staffing of registered nurses or physical therapists. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
