Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Contributing to its top-shelf resume, this facility also was awarded a superb long-term care grade, with a grade of A-. For residents looking for a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 90.51383 percent of its patients, which is a few points below what we were hoping for. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Turning to another strength for this facility, we awarded them one of our more positive scores in our short-term care category as well, with a grade of B+. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to measure a facility's rehabilitation services In order to offer quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally must offer better levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final item we considered in this category is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that 6.3 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

The last area we scored was nursing. We gave this nursing home a solid grade in this category, with a B-. Although this was not as strong as several of this nursing home's other grades, it is nevertheless not a poor grade. There are quite a few subcategories within this category. Most of these criteria reflect levels of nurse staffing. This place provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures. Although this nursing home got docked a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in some of these quality measures. With less than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it performed well in this statistic. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of moving residents at least once a day.
