Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of long-term care. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

This nursing home also performed well in the area of inspections. In fact, it earned a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that area with an A. Few nursing homes with an overall grade in this range performed this well in multiple categories. Arguably the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this area. We weighed the qualifications of nurses at the facility, in addition to the number of hours the nurses spent with patients, in calculating our grade in this category. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as employing a policy of turning residents more frequently.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next category we graded was short-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of C. Even though this wound up being its poorest category grade, this is nevertheless nothing to be ashamed of. In the category of short-term care, we try to assess indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We assess a facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Unfortunately, we weren't able to track down information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. The final measure we considered in this area is the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 4.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. This figure was below average.
