Facility Inspections

Grade: A

The primary reason this facility received a decent overall grade is its excellent health inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our higher grades in that category, with an A. This is a notably better grade than the place's overall score, which was decent but not in the elite range. Arguably the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in this industry.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing rating. Nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an B. We looked at the levels of nurses employed by the facility, as well as the quantity of time the nurses were with patients, in computing our rating in this area. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Pennsylvania in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as having a protocol of turning a patient even once per day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's third most favorable category ended up being long-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a B-. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to just 67.41936 percent of its residents, which is slightly concerning. Nevertheless, this facility keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The last category we rated is short-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of C. In forming these short-term care scores, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to create a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 3.9 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
