Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition to faring well in its overall grade, this facility earned a nearly flawless inspection report. Consequently, it received one of our highest scores in this area with an A. Inspection ratings account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

We also want to note the fact that this facility was awarded a top-shelf score of A in our long-term care category. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a life threatening ailment for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home doesn't take any chances. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses commit to residents as well as the level of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home performed very well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The last category we assessed was short-term care. This facility was awarded a strong short-term care grade this year, with a grade of B-. Although this isn't quite as strong as some of its other category grades, this is nevertheless an acceptable grade for this category. Our short-term care scores are considered to be most important for folks in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not just nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that just 4.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
