Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

Even though this nursing home's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually received a respectable grade in our short-term care rating. We awarded it a B- for that category. This bailed out its overall score to an extent. In computing our short-term care grades, we look at a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is typically a meaningful measure of the facility's rehabilitation services. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. The hope is always that this does not adversely impact the quality of care. Finally, we looked at the number of patients that eventually returned home from this nursing home. We found that 5.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well below the national average.

Facility Inspections

Grade: C

This nursing home earned a C for inspections. This was certainly better than its other category grades. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. This facility had 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were in any of the categories labeled G through L. This means this facility avoided the more ominous categories of deficiencies. Lastly, we would like to note that this facility was assessed some government fines in recent years. Fortunately these were not on the high end as government fines go. Nevertheless, this isn't what we want to see.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This nursing home was given its third highest category score in the area of long-term care. We gave this nursing home a grade of C in this category, which is an acceptable grade. Long-term care scores are based in part on the facility's volume of care. This includes a broad spectrum of personal care services, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living to routine medical services. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

Moving on to the fourth area, we awarded this nursing home a D for nursing. This was the facility's weakest category rating. Nursing grades are heavily correlated with quantity of nursing care available. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. This place also had terrible scores in some of the quality-based metrics to pair with its low nursing hours. We looked at the percent of patients suffering pressure ulcers and we were quite disappointed. This facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic.
