Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Among its many high-end scores, this nursing home was given a top-shelf long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a score of A- in that category. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 98.59155 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a dangerous illness for nursing home patients so we prefer when a facility doesn't take any chances. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Turning to the third category, this nursing home also received a grade of B+ for its short-term care rating. This is an above average grade in this area. In calculating our short-term care grades, we size up the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This rating is more often than not a reliable measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 4.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The final area we scored was nursing, where this facility received a B. While this is its worst category grade, this is nevertheless an above average rating. Our nursing score assesses quite a few factors, however, the paramount one is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
