Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ long-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 96.61655 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. Nursing scores are tied to quantity of nursing care available. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place South Dakota in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving residents at least once a day.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In our final area, this nursing home also was given an excellent short-term care score, with a grade of B+. This wrapped up an elite report card. Our short-term care grades are critical for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This means a broad spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that 4.2 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
