Facility Inspections

Grade: A

The primary reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it an A. Arguably the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Additionally, we awarded this facility a B in our long-term care category. This happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 98.50187 percent of its residents, which is much higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next area we looked at was short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a decent grade of B-. Short-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a vast scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. We were not able to find registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this nursing home. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 5.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit below the national average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

The next category we scored is nursing. We awarded it a C in that area. This is a decent grade in this category. The nursing score includes quite a few subcategories, most of which are based on nursing hours. This nursing home averages just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Finally, our nursing ratings also factor in quality-based metrics, such as preventing major falls. Although this nursing home didn't have as many nursing hours per resident as many other facilities we assessed, it was still better than average in the area of avoiding major falls.
