Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a strong facility overall, this nursing home also excelled in our short-term care rating, where it received an elite grade of A+. With our short-term care grade, we endeavor to forge a valuable measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we analyze a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. We found that 5.8 percent of this nursing home's residents were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category. Nursing grades are largely based on a facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Florida in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as having a policy of moving a patient at least once a day.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Turning to our inspection category, this nursing home excelled in that area, which is based on the nursing home's recent government inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it a score of A- for that category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively minor. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. This is really what you like to see in this important metric.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The last area we looked at was long-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a favorable grade of B. Nursing homes that receive this kind of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are well cared for. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is too frequently a life or death illness for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
