Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A-. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to be an immediate threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

This facility also received a strong long-term care grade. In fact, we gave them a grade of B in that area, which is one of our better. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of nursing care, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 98 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a life threatening health condition for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home does not take any chances. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This facility's third highest category ended up being its short-term care score, where it was awarded a grade of C. In determining our short-term care scores, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is considered to be a solid measure of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that just 4.5 percent of this facility's patients returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Turning to the fourth area, this nursing home was given a grade of C for nursing, which is an acceptable grade. Nursing ratings are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This figure is significantly below the national average. Lastly, we also baked some quality-based metrics into our nursing ratings. This place was relatively weak in two of the major metrics we look at, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are typically decent indicators of the quality of nursing care offered.
