Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

While this place's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

We were also pleasantly surprised to find that this nursing home received a decent long-term care rating in our assessment. We awarded it a grade of C in that category. For residents looking for a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. Frankly, we were a bit alarmed this facility vaccinated only 64.48276 percent of its residents for pneumonia. On a more positive note, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. Nursing scores are heavily correlated with nurse staffing levels. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This facility fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Moving on to our final category, this nursing home really did not fare very well in this category either. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as as uninspiring as it gets. In calculating our short-term care grades, we analyze a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This score is more often than not a meaningful assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Based on its abysmal rating in this area, we weren't surprised to learn that this facility offered significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most facilities. The final item we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics was damning for this nursing home's short-term care grade.
