Facility Inspections

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection grade. In fact, inspections is its best category. In that area, we gave this facility an A. Our inspection ratings account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home was awarded an impressive short-term care score as well. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that category with a grade of B+. In our short-term care score, we seek to create a meaningful barometer for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess a facility's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Unfortunately, it does not appear that this facility submitted data regarding its registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who returned home from this nursing home. We found that 5.9 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B. In determining our nursing grades, we look at both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Massachusetts in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of turning patients even once per day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next category we rated is long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of C. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. We were optimistic to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 97.76358 percent of its residents for pneumonia. This place keeps its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
