Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Even though we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it earned a better long-term care rating this year. We gave it a C in that area. In computing our long-term care grades, we size up the personal care received by the nursing home's patients. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Candidly, we were a bit concerned this nursing home gave the vaccine to a relatively low 88.20375 percent of its residents. On a more positive note, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Facility Inspections

Grade: C

As it turns out, its government inspection reports were not the source of this facility's bottom of the barrel overall grade. In fact, it received a grade of C in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One critical factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. This facility was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were category G through L deficiencies. This indicates that this facility dodged the more ominous categories of deficiencies. Lastly, this nursing home was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. This is generally a really bad sign. We would never recommend this facility.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

Sadly, this nursing home's next highest score was short-term care. However, with a D in this category, it still performed relatively poorly. Our short-term care grades are meaningful for residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Based on its score in this category, we weren't stunned to discover that this nursing home was well below average in terms of the quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents based on the figures we looked at. Honestly, this was about what we expected to find. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This definitely wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 5.4 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The last category we rated is nursing, which proved to be a weak spot for this facility. We gave this facility a grade of D for our nursing category. The nursing rating weighs many data points, however, the main consideration is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. With just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were well below the national average. Finally, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing grades. This nursing home was above average in two of the metrics we considered, with solid scores for avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. These metrics are often good measures of the quality of nursing care available.
