Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

While we were not high on this place overall, we awarded it a B+ for our inspections category. This grade is far better than the place's overall score. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being relatively minor. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

We awarded this facility a respectable grade in the area of nursing as well, with a grade of C. Our nursing score is primarily tied to the facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home surprisingly excelled in some of the quality measures we assessed. In fact, it scored well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is as important as the quantity of hours of care offered.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

This facility's second least favorable category is short-term care, where it earned just a D in that area. This is a well below average grade. In the category of short-term care, we try to evaluate indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Given its poor score in this area, we weren't shocked to find that this facility offered substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 4.1 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The last category we graded was long-term care, which ended up being a weak spot for this nursing home. We gave this facility a D for long-term care. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. After considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. We were optimistic to discover that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
