Facility Inspections

Grade: B

While we gave this facility a poor overall score, we awarded it a B for our inspections rating. This was the result of the facility receiving a decent inspection report this year. Inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

We were also surprised to find that this facility received a decent nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. Nursing ratings are primarily based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures. Although this facility got dinged a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in some of these quality measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed very well in this metric. This is often a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a protocol of moving a resident at least once a day.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

This facility wound up receiving a bottom of the barrel score in our short-term care category. It received an F in this area. Our short-term care grade is commonly used to measure a nursing home's rehabilitation services To have high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally must offer higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Given its grade in this area, we were not surprised to learn that this nursing home is well below average in terms of the quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we looked at. The final item we considered in this category is the number of patients that returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.6 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The last area we rated is long-term care. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this area, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. Nursing homes that do not fare well in this category typically aren't as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination records. We were concerned by the fact that this facility vaccinated only 48.011364 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this nursing home was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than most nursing homes. This was its best score in this category.
