Facility Inspections

Grade: A+

In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection ratings. One key factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively insignificant. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This nursing home received high grades in the category of long-term care as well. Consequently, we gave it one of our best scores in that category with a score of A-. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facilities third most favorable area was short-term care. We awarded it a grade of B- in this area. This is basically a slightly below average score in this area. Short-term care grades are generally used to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation To offer high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. It does not appear that this nursing home submitted information about its staffing of registered nurses or physical therapists. The last item we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 5.2 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The last area we graded is nursing, is this nursing home's worst area. We gave this facility a D in this category. This really was one of the couple of dings on a strong report card. Nursing ratings are based largely on quality and quantity of nursing care. This facility offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is well below average. Although this nursing home's nursing hours were below average, it surprised us in some of the qualitative areas in this category. In particular, we were pleased to find that its residents appear to be sustaining fewer pressure ulcers than the national average.
