Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this place is a quality facility is that it earned an impressive inspection grade. Inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In that category, we awarded this facility an A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. This facility was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Additionally, this nursing home also received favorable long-term care scores in our assessment. Indeed, we awarded them one of our better scores in that category, with a grade of B. Facilities that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. On top of considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is far higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Turning to the category of nursing care, this facility didn't perform quite as well in this area as some of the categories discussed above. Nevertheless, a grade of B- in this category is by no means a bad score. We assessed the skill-level of nurses employed by the nursing home, as well as the number of hours those nurses worked with patients, in determining our score in this category. This particular nursing home provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This figure is significantly below the national average. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility surprisingly fared better in some of the quality measures we assessed. In fact, it performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is as important as the number of hours of care offered.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Moving on to the fourth area, this facility was awarded a decent short-term care grade of C. In our short-term care rating, we endeavor to craft a sound measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess a nursing home's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. It does not look like this nursing home provided information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. The last item we considered in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 4.7 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
