Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

On top of performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home received even higher grades for short-term care. It received one of our best scores in that area with an A. In crafting our short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to create a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 6.3 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Adding to its impressive category grades, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. The nursing score is based on several subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the number of hours nurses spent with residents. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of turning a resident more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The last area we analyzed was long-term care, which turned out to be this facility's worst area. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this category, which is clearly somewhat disappointing. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the criteria we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccines. Fortunately, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.84393 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this nursing home also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
