Facility Inspections

Grade: B

Although we gave this nursing home a poor overall score, we awarded it a B for our inspections rating. This is the result of the facility receiving a decent government inspection report this year. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing grade. In fact, nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of D. We assessed the levels of nurses working for the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours those nurses spent with residents, in calculating our rating in this category. This facility averaged only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing scores. This nursing home fared well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Additionally, we gave this nursing home an F in the area of long-term care. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After we finished looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination records. We were pleased to learn that this facility vaccinated 99.42693 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this facility also keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The next area we looked at was short-term care, in which this nursing home was given a bottom of the barrel score here as well. We gave it an F in this category, which is obviously very concerning. Short-term care grades are typically employed to judge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To have high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. Based on its score in this category, we were not surprised to learn that this place is well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the data we looked at. The final item we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 4.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics sunk this nursing home's short-term care grade.
