Facility Inspections

Grade: A

While we were fairly low on this nursing home overall, we awarded it an A for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the nursing home's overall grade. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid facilities with a list of severe deficiencies flagged. This facility was hit with 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. Nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this facility an C. Our nursing grade is based on several components, but the main consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home surprisingly fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the quantity of hours of care offered.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

We awarded this facility just a D for our short-term care grade. This is not a score to write home about. In calculating our short-term care scores, we look at a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is generally a solid measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 3.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The next category we looked at is long-term care, which ended up being a weak link for this nursing home. We awarded this nursing home a grade of just D for our long-term care category. If you are seeking anything other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care ratings. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
